Week 45
Common good, CCTV, 20mph speed limits, the Freeport, beach access ramp, and Area Committee ...
This week’s post is a day late. Apologies, but there’s a lot to talk about.
Common Good disposal
We have another consultation started on disposal of Common Good land.
This one is a bit of an oddity. As you probably know Green Hive had taken over the Seaman’s Hall in Harbour Street and they have big plans for it. As part of that they would like to acquire a strip of land on the town side of the hall next to the old gas works site and it turns out that about half of it is probably Common Good land. It’s roughly the area outlined in red below.
You can find the full story of why this is probably Common Good land in the consultation document but the proposal is to assume that it is and hand it over to Green Hive.
CCTV around town
We’re currently in the situation where the CCTV around Nairn is out of operation due to damage caused to the fibre cabling during building works at Court House Lane. Officers have now confirmed that available budget has been identified to fund the full upgrade of the CCTV in Nairn and installation of a radio link from the Court House to the Police Station to replace the damaged section of fibre cable.
Works will start this week. The upgraded system includes new monitoring screens and equipment in the Police Station with all images also transmitted to the CCTV control room in Burnett Road Police Station in Inverness.
20mph speed limits
I’ve talked before about the proposal to bring in 20mph speed limits in 30mph areas across the Highland Council area. Maps are now available for all the areas and you can find them all here. The areas in our ward are Nairn, Auldearn, and Piperhill and are marked in pink on the maps. Click on the links above or maps below to see the maps as full size PDFs.
Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport
The Freeport are holding their first community webinar online this Wednesday, 22nd March from 6pm to 7pm. Despite the name this effects our ward, especially the northern end which is part of the wider freeport area.

Beach access ramp
Work starts this week on an access platform and ramp for the Nairn Links Beach and it will last approximately 3 weeks. An area to the top of the Cummings Street Car Park at the Links will be cordoned off on today and tomorrow (20th-21st March) for the contractor to set down construction materials.
You may remember that we agreed to support this project at our January Area Committee meeting and we gave £28,666 to the Nairn Access Panel for it from the Community Regeneration Fund.
Nairnshire Area Committee
We are having a short meeting of the Area Committee tomorrow which has an agenda with two substantive items where we are being asked:
to agree that £4,076.21 costs incurred by the Council’s Parking Enforcement Team to operate the invitation to pay parking scheme at the three Nairn Common Good sites is charged against the Nairn Common Good Fund.
to approve proposals to un-adopt the road leading to Ardersier port.
