I wasn’t intending to post this week but an Amber Weather Warning from the Met Office is due to take effect from 00:01am on Tuesday, 31st December and covers a number of areas within the Highland region. At particular risk of flooding are areas within the Nairn & Cawdor ward along the banks of the River Nairn.
Nairn
A flood warning has been issued for Nairn for the area shown in red on the map below:
Flood barriers have been installed at the River Nairn and at Harbour Street prior to the weather warning becoming effective overnight.
The Fishertown area of Nairn is at high risk of flooding and residents in this area, who have experienced flooding issues at their property in the past, can collect sandbags from the Highland Council’s depot at the Recycling Centre on the A939.
It is currently anticipated that water levels will peak in this area tomorrow (Tuesday, 31st December) during the early afternoon.
Cawdor
A flood warning has also been issued for areas around the River Nairn near Cawdor as shown in red on the map below:
Members of the public are advised to routinely check the SEPA website for any relevant updates throughout the duration of the weather warning.
Assistance can also be sought from the British Red Cross and more information is available here.
Police are advising the public to delay travel until conditions improve and remain vigilant to debris and surface water on the roads.
Resources are also available on the Ready Scotland website.
