The SNP is going to publish a local government manifesto for the coming local council elections both for the whole of Scotland and for Highland Council but I’ve been trying to put together a local manifesto so that, if I’m elected, you know what I will do for you and with you.
So here’s my first pass at a list. Let me know if there’s things you think I’m missing.
I will continue to work alongside our MSPs Emma Roddick and Fergus Ewing to ensure that the Nairn By-Pass is built.
I will make sure that the new Nairn Academy provides the best possible education for our young people … but I will oppose any proposal to move Nairn Library to the site.
I will ensure that the Nairn Common Good Fund, lands and assets are well managed so that the people of our town benefit in the best possible ways in the years ahead.
I will liaise with all our five community councils, and other local groups to ensure that Nairnshire is always a top priority on Highland Council's agenda.
I will work to ensure that residential developments provide the affordable houses we need, not just the houses developers want to build, and that an “infrastructure first” approach is followed to avoid the problems we’ve seen in the past in places like the Springfield/Lochloy estate in Nairn.
I will always respond promptly to your phone calls, emails, and direct messages. I will hold regular surgeries for you to bring me your concerns.
I will keep you informed of what I and Highland Council are up to. Sometimes you may not agree with what is happening but I will at least attempt to ensure that you understand why it is happening.
That last by the way is something I currently intend doing via this route as it seems to be working well thus far.
Coming out of all of this I’ve also got an ever growing list of specific items which I think the community of Nairn really could be doing better on and I’d like to think that between us we might be able to do that … but I’ll talk about that in another post.
